Little is known of Barebone's early life, writing in 2001 Nicholas Tyacke speculated that he was the son of John Barebone rector of Charwelton and Mary Roper of Daventry and that he probably had an older brother called Fear-God (who is known to have been a minor poet), but this can not confirmed because the parish Charwelton registers for that period no longer exist.
